Merchants Accepting Bitcoin

Like all other forms of currency that come in varying forms such as paper bills, coins, and credit card purchases, some Bitcoin users are interested in spending their coins versus hoarding them.  New global merchants accepting Bitcoin are popping up daily.  Payments using the virtual currency are quicker than using credit cards and the cost of accepting Bitcoin, is lower than accepting credit cards.   Pembury Tavern in East London, is the first UK pub to accept Bitcoin. The Pembury Tavern in Hackney, east London – as well as its sister pubs in Cambridge, Norwich and Peterborough – are now accepting the virtual currency.

Kreuzberg district of Berlin, restaurants, bars and a record shop have been using the payment system for months. In Ireland, just outside the small town of Birr, Bitcoin users can now book a night at a farmhouse bed and breakfast.1  Many other merchants accept Bitcoin.  For an accessible list of online merchants accepting Bitcoin, this link shows sites that are updated by the site owners themselves.  The list is not verified. https://www.spendbitcoins.com/places/

There has been an internet campaign petitioning Amazon to begin accept Bitcoin.  The pressure is on.  A new online merchant, BitcoinStore, opened shop in early March 2013.  They classify themselves as a “mega-store.” They only accept Bitcoin for payment and have “an inventory of 500,000 items, ranging from laptops to motion sensors to binoculars.”BitcoinStore’s main purpose for opening for business is to be a tough competitor for Amazon, selling at a much cheaper price since there are no fees associated with accepting bitcoins for the products.  They plan to keep prices low for some time in order to compete with and challenge Amazon to start accepting Bitcoin.  In recent months, Amazon began offering their own currency.
